Hi all,

Does anyone knows how many times welding repair allow in structural welding? I heard it is 2 times. But I am looking is there any specification or standard which this number adhere?

Thanks in advance.

I have not seen a limit on number of repairs for carbon steel base material - structural or otherwise.

Hi

Not sure about your structure but in doing some pipe work repair recently the figure quoted was two, reason being as I understand it, is hardness values around the joint tend to go outside the specification after anymore than two heat treatments which we required on the pipe work to comply with the specification.

What material? Most carbon steel pipe is supplied either hot rolled, annealed or normalized. For low alloy steel, like T1 structural material, I could see repair limits placed because of welding heat input on original heat treatment.

Thanks for all your answers. But I am looking any literature or standard which I can refer. I need to have back up for my answer.

Hi

What welding standards or design standard are you currently working to, or what code is your structure being designed to.
Without some more information from you about what material your actually welding its difficult to help ie are you using stainless steel, aluminium, carbon steel, alloy steel?

Thanks Desertfox,

The welding process GMAW and the material is being welded ASTM A572 gr.50 to 60.
The welding code is CSA W59.03

I reported in my periodic newsletter PWL#103 the results of a study published in the February 2012 Issue of the Welding Journal at page 25 that addressed the problem, by testing repeated welding in a set of plates.
