Hey all,

Many B16.5 steel flanges I've come across are made from A105N steel. I thought I had read a standard that required all Class 600 & higher rated flanges to be normalized. Looking through B16.5 & B31.4 today I could not find this requirement anywhere. Does anyone know if this is a specific material requirement under any pressure piping standard (B31.3, B31.4, etc.) or regulation (49 CFR 195, 192, etc.)?

Thanks for your help in advance.

ASTM A105 requires all flanges Class 300 and higher to be heat treated, not particularly normalized. I believe this is more of a ASTM issue rather than ASME.

SA-105 requires heat treatment for flanges above Class 300. Not necessarily normalized.

Thank you gentlemen. I should've gone straight to A105 to read up on this. All I have ever seen is A105N on flanges, but it's good to know that normalizing is not the only heat treatment option that is acceptable.
