need sensor for qc of speaker cone

hi i work for a company that builds speaker cones. we have a camara system (keyence cv1200) to detect flaws such as holes in cone and thin spots, for advaced qc. but these systems are very exspisive. we only have them on 3 out of 18 of our machines. my quistion is does anyone know of a better and cheaper way of doing this? i know thay have to make a photocell that can see small amouts of light shing through a speaker. any help would be great.

An alternative to using very sensitive sensors is to use more intense light. If you hook up two sensors - one under a known-good cone and the other one under the CUT - it will be a fairly easy matter to detect differences in light level between the two.

For more discrimination against ambient light, use modulated light. Most photo cells use that to look through and detect targets in high ambient light applications.

I would look into Vision Systems ( Cognex). These have become reasonably priced and easy to use. I would think that to verify the "flatness" of transmitted light would be easy.

wavelenght !
