Nastran strange crash 1

Hello everybody,

i am working with MSC Patran\Nastran 2014. It is strange, but since a couple of days, i can't do a normal modes analysis anymore. The reason is that i get from the .f06 output file of Nastran, the following report:

The model is a simple cantilever beam that i made just to solve the problem (the original model is different). I never saw something like that, and i really hope that i am dealing with just a stupid mistake of mine.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Ok, i work on Windows 8.1 Pro. Tested on a machine with Windows 7 and it works... why!?

Nastran does not work on windows 8.1 as patran does not run on 8.1.
the only supported platform at moment is windows 7.
I had the same problem upgrading to version 14 and switching to a new machine. I spoke with MSC technical peoples and they told me to do not use anything else than Windows 7

Did you get exactly (or nearly) the same error?

By the way i can't believe it... Also in Windows 7 compatibility mode there is no way to make it work. What should i do? Virtualize everytime i need to run Patran? Did you find any usefull solution other than changing operating system?

I was running Nastran 2014 on a Windows server 2012 and I had some unpredictable errors. sometime was working but really slow and sometime I had some errors similar to your.
Patran, on Wn 8.1 Pro was crashing so often that was impossible to work.
I spoke with assistance and they say that I don't have other option than use win 7 for both..
Now I have on the same workstation , a core i7 2600k with 32gb ram, both patran and nastran and I use often desktop remote access to work on patran..
Nastran is so fast comparate to previous version that the fact that is on the same workstation is not an issue.Also I use a separate ssd for nastran scratch and this help a lot the possibility to use both software on same machine. As nastran do not keep the system disk busy during the solution.

However I have news. As I said, I tested both Patran and Nastran 2014 on a Win7 machine and they both worked. So I decided to virtualize Win7 on my working machine (the one with Win8.1 Pro):

VMWare->Win7Pro->Installed MSC suite (fresh installation obviously).

No luck with Patran, that is it crashes when I try to run it. I though it was because of the virtualization, so I Istalled Win7Pro on a different partition of the HDD. And again nothing that work. To make it short, after hours of testing I can say tha Patran and Nastran 2014 DO NOT work on Win7, while they DO work on Win7Pro SP1! The service pack is fundamental. After a week of time lost I can also say that MSC suite is the worst piece of software i have ever worked with (I have been working with it for years so I can say it)

Ouch... those are some damning words, I am sure many MSC purists will disagree with you, although I am not one of them I feel pretty good about FEMAP/NX/Nei.. just a personal opinion.
