A friend asked me if I knew what the standards would be for methane storage vessels. In this case, a 20,000 gallon vessel. He wanted to know what distance it should be kept from other vessels etc.

I believe this may be addressed in NFPA 573 and perhaps API 540 but I'm not certain and I don't have either document at my house. Would anyone have a rule of thumb answer for this query?

The applicable NFPA standard depends on the application. If the application is for motor vehicle fueling (e.g., LNG buses) you would apply the requirements of NFPA 57. If your constructing a LNG vessel for a peak shaving or utility use, you would apply NFPA 59A.

The application is storage at a test facility. This facility blends the Methane with LOX for test purposes.

In your specified condition NFPA 59A would apply.
