Metal Stud Flange Bearing

Hi,

I am designing a metal stud wall for lateral and gravity. I'm planning to connect a metal track to flanges of the studs in order to carry the ceiling joists. I can not let them sit directly on the studs.
I was wondering if that would be an adequate design or not since 20 GA metal stud is not really thick. The shear on the connections is only 150 lb D+L.

The detail that you describe is typical. The roof joists usually sit on the top track. The joists should be checked for web crippling.

Hi ash060,

Thanks for your response but the wall is sticking in so I can not let them sit on the top track.
I need to attach roof joists to the metal track (ledger ) and the metal track ( ledger ) to the studs.
 
You need to know a little more than what you have stated. How are the wall studs braced? Dry-wall or bridging? In-plane or out-of-plane? Start with Cold Formed Steel Engineers Institute CFSEI
 
Provide a continuous cee ledger along the face of the studs and screw to the face of the wall studs. Just provide enough screws for the applied load.
