Here's a link to the place before the collapse - just zoom in and use the bird's eye view.

Here's a close up view - Link

Looks like a wood framed cantilever awning of sorts that just wasn't anchored down well enough.

I was thinking similarly. Wood mansard trusses, somewhat heavy tile, significant overhang with not much backspan, inadequate anchorage, wind gust......

Time to inspect and reinforce the rest of it.

This is the sort of stupidity that allows me to pay my son's college tuition (he's smarter than I...he's majoring in something besides engineering!!). Geez...I love forensics.

meh... I know a BS EECS from Berkeley graduating next year. 5-figure starting with signing bonus, stock options, productivity bonus, performance bonus, AND 3 meals a day ;-)

Provided by a McContractor, no doubt...

I worked with a guy who's meat and potatoes was evaluating and fixing McD (and other fast food restaurant) wood trusses. There is no doubt that speed and low price result in long term problems if the designers and builders aren't really sharp. Also, plate connected wood trusses are designed to "just barely" survive code-level loads, and the plate connections are vulnerable to the slightest deviation in max load, heat exposure, etc.
