materials for water lines

Hi, I have noticed that water lines in the oil plant I am surveying have valves and sometimes lines are made of various materials, above all bronze and cast iron, sometimes steel.
Could you explain how to choose one or another material and the criterions?
Lines are cooling water, raw water, condensate hot water .

Hi Ferex,

there are a number of factors:

1. Selection of materials suitable for the chemical composition, pressure and temperature of the contents. Perry's has useful tables for materials selection by these criteria, as do various pipe manufacturers.

2. Industry standards. For essentially the same duties, site standards can mean that :

The clean water industry uses plastics epoxy coated mild steel and stainless steel

Sewage sector uses plastics, bronze galvanised mild steel and cast iron or ductile iron

Pharmaceutical/fine chemical industry uses stainless steel
