Material for attachment to a pressure vessel 1

Can I weld a mild steel attachment such as a pipe support bracket to a pressure vessel that is designed according to ASME Section VIII, Div.1 but is not a "U" stamp vessel?
I couldn't find any posts addressing this by searching.

ASME and NBIC do not reference permissible actions on vessels which are not stamped. Your local jurisdiction may have regulations relating to such vessels, so I would advise to check with the appropriate office in your location.

That being said, UG-4(b) permits attachments to be welded to the pressure boundary provided they are of weldable quality [see UW-5(b)].
 
Yes, you can do this.

Your reference paragraph would be UG-4:
"Material for nonpressure parts, such as skirts, supports, baffles, lugs, clips, and extended heat transfer surfaces, need not conform to the specifications for the material to which they are attached or to a material specification permitted in this Division, but if attached to the vessel by welding shall be of weldable quality [see UW-5(b)]. The allowalbe stress values for material not identified in accordance with UG-93 shall not exceed 80% of the maximum allowable stress value permitted for similar material in Subsection C."

You probably want to use a welding process and filler metal which matches the vessel material, and then is also compatible with the attachment material. The bigger question might be, what does your attachment and its loads do to the vessel stresses, deformations, etc?

Material for weld metal to be the same, noted, thanks.
2nd point about the consequence of the structural attachment in this case for my situation it should be evaluated accordingly using an appropriate method.
 
In case of attachment on Stainless vessels there may be requirements stated in the client specifications also. This is to avoid direct welding of CS parts on the stainless steel body parts (i.e. shell, dish plates).
