Are there there limits on maximum amount of reinforcing bars used in masonry design?
There is something in the ACI but it's not very straight forward.

If the steel and masonry stresses work out below the allowables, would that meet the needed requirements?
 
Just to clarify, I am not referring to physical limitations, but rather to As/(b x d) ratio.
 
There are some limits, for example, ACI 530-08, ASD method, Section 2.3.3.4 for Special Shear Walls gives a limiting reinforcement ratio.
 
Ref ACI 530-02, ASD gives maximum limit of (0.04 x An) for columns. Chapter 3, Strength design, section 3.2.3.5 gives maximum reinforcement percentages based on the value of R and two critical strain conditions - For R > 1.5, (a) For walls subjected to in-plane forces, for columns, and for beams, a strain of 5 times yield in the extreme tension reinforcement and a maximum masonry strain of 0.0025 for concrete masonry. (b) For walls subjected to out-of-plane forces, a strain of ...........
