Can anyone enlighten me regarding fog carburetor/carburetion technology? I am finding Google-type references to it regarding winterizing boats, but am not finding information as to just what it is.

Thanks.

I've sprayed fogging oil into the carburetor on a boat whilst holding the throttle open enough to prevent stalling and then letting it stall just before the can is empty to protect the internals from rust during layup. This of course was after changing the oil and filter and adding a fuel stabilizer and was preferable to removing 8 spark plugs installed before the engine was shoehorned into the boat.

Dale,

It could be a reference to the type of carburetion used for Propane or Natural Gas. I have heard of these being called vaporizers, mixers, as well as fog carbs. They are common in mobile industrial apps, like fork trucks, as well as stationary apps such as power generators.

The parent company of one of my former employers has pretty much bought up all of the manufacturing rights to these older designs. Check out:

Fogging oil is a product usually composed of light oil with ashless corrosion inhibitors packaged in an aerosol can and applied as Blacksmith describes (or through the throttle plate for EFI engines) for long-term (i.e. winterizing) storage of engines, especially in severe (marine) environments.

FC-W spec engine oils already have robust corrosion protection built-in and may reduce the need for/benefit of 'fogging' in 4T engines using them.
