Line Constraints

An amigo of mine just showed me something he had learned in NX5. It is also available on NX6. You can assign ASSEMBLY constraints to lines, turning them from smart curves to genius ones. My guess is that is a boil over from Mechanical routing which is currently locked out for us here. I checked the NX help pages and did not get any hits on it in there. Play with it and see if it can help you!

This is a good way to assemble things like springs. Keep a line (or datum axis) along the axis of the helix allowing you to constrain a spring to another feature (spring post for instance). You can keep the line in a separate reference set so you can make it 'invisible' when it comes time to make a drawing.

You can use virtually any geometric object which is part of your Component as something which can be referenced while constraining the Component, even if you're eventually going to replace the Reference Set with one which does not display all of that extra geometry such as lines, points, datums and other objects which are generally used only for reference.

In fairness you could do some of that with mating as well, but I'm yet to see any point upon which the newer constraints are less capable.
