Hi All..!

Does anyone knows how to calculate the Length of Preheating coil? I want to calculate it for pilot-plant.

It is made of SS and by using the pump, I'm injecting butane gas in the coil at 150 psi and 22 deg celcius. The coil is placed inside the waterbath having the temperature 40 deg cel constant.

My objective is to achieve butane temp initial 22C to final 40C with constant 150 psi pressure so for that what length of SS pipe i have to use to achieve 40C temp of butane?

For this calculation, Do I have to assume the pipe dia? Is there any book which I can refer for my problem?

Any help is welcome..!

Best regards,

You are asking how to calculate the Length of Preheating coil in the piping & fluid mechanics forum section rather than the heat transfer section, so I'm going to assume you know what you are doing and have already figured out the required heat transfer area. Otherwise, you'd treat this as a heat transfer problem, right?

The Length of pipe for a helical coil (I assume this is what you want - not a flat, pancake spiral) is given by:

L = [(n * D *3.14)^2 + H^2]^1/2
where,
L = Length of required pipe, in.
n = Number of pipe turns in coil
D = Diameter of the coil, in.
H = Height of the helical coil, in.
