I have a question about grinding a shoulder and cylindrical diameter. I guess an undercut is essential in a prior turning operation so that in grinding the corner breakdown does not occur.

I have searched a lot of technical articles on the internet but could not get any which specifically mention about this point. Could anybody give me any refernec for this specific point? Or information about any alternative process if we want to avoid the undercut.

I quote grinding jobs with shoulders. The lowest cost, cheapest, is with an under cut in the face and journal where we just touch the face. It takes a little longer to avoid the face than to touch it. Many customers will allow you to plunge into the radius when the drawing does not show it.
As an engineer I like to see the undercut best. The most expensive is a ground radius with a tolerance.
