I am looking for information regarding the design of temporary shoring for trench excavations, specifically for water and sewer installations where cutting back the excavation is impractical. Does anyone know of any resources (websites or textbooks)that outline shoring design? We generally use pre fabricated steel or aluminum trench boxes which require certification for each use.

Thanks

For a book on shoring, etc :
ASCE , Geotechnical Special Publication No 74
"Guidelines of Engineering Practice for Braced and Tied-back Excavations". Check at
For websites, try :

1. US Nafvac , Design Manual 7.02
Download pdf dile from :
2. Shoring Table (Canada)

3. or also try from USACE publications
I am sure they have similar to NAVFAC above

Hope this helps you along

I used to do alot of pipe installation and shoring for installing groundwater treatment systems and digging out oil contaminated soil in close proximity to buildings - often there was no way to cut back sides.
I found renting hydraulic shoring useful for the pipe installations; it was light enough for a man to handle and you hop skotched it along with the job & machine and modular shoring useful for the box shaped excavations. For large and/or deeper pipe jobs, the modular shoring (boxes and longer shields worked well. They were rated equivalent to tight steel sheeting, which I used on occaission - but that was more for groundwater control as we were digging 13 ft deep adjacent to a river.
You can also buy the hydraulic shoring or modular shoring, if you have enough work to warrant it.
I know of rental and sales company that offers these products, but I dont know if i can post brand names on this site - so you may email me directly if you want to know more about that.
