IAI XSEL controller, serial connection issue

In a TIG welding application I often lose contact between the controller and the PC (RS232 connection).
The cable has a shield that is connected to pin 1 (frame ground) of T.P. connector (on XSEL) but the resistance from pin 1 to ground is very high.
Is this normal or there is some problem internally in the controller?
