Hello Community,

I'm hoping someone can help resolve this:

Question is: For ASME B31.3 Process Piping - do I need to rehydro after welding a pipe shoe (sliding support) on? Material is Carbon Steel.

My initial thoughts are: "no, because it is not a pressure retaining weld;" however, it does create a HAZ around that fillet weld and it is on the pressure boundary so perhaps it does?

Thanks

Yes, the hydro test should be performed after the pipe shoe was "welded" on the pipe. It's to detect any possible defect related to the welding directly on the pipe.

Your jurisdiction may be the final arbiter of that decision.

Section 345.2.6 applies here I think.

345.2.6 Repairs or Additions After Leak Testing. If
repairs or additions are made following the leak test, the
affected piping shall be retested, except that for minor
repairs or additions the owner may waive retest requirements
when precautionary measures are taken to assure
sound construction.

Also 345.9.1 would apply, especially part b

(a) Circumferential, longitudinal, and spiral (helical
seam) groove welds shall be 100% radiographed in
accordance with para. 344.5 or 100% ultrasonically
examined in accordance with para. 344.6.
(b) All welds, including structural attachment welds,
not covered in (a) above, shall be examined using the
liquid penetrant method (para. 344.4) or, for magnetic
materials, the magnetic particle method (para. 344.3).

Thank you littleInch. It would be useful.

Thank you kindly for your responses.

LittleInch: I had found that clause shortly after I posted the question - glad to see you validate it.

Too bad you have already done this - a bolted on shoe would have saved you the trouble. Next time !!!
