Hi All,
Do you specify hot-dip galvanized for the steel if it is exposed to weather and will receive a fire spray?
Thank you.

Exposed to the weather AND fire protected?

I give up, what's the application where this is occurring? Maybe something petro-chemical or industrial?

a2mfk,
This is a new parking deck to be built over an existing building. The steel structure of the new deck is exposed to the weather and, according to the architect, has to be fire rated.

Sounds like a case for fire engineering to show that the steel does not require protection. If that doesn't work, maybe the columns should be concrete or concrete encased.

Consult the fire-spray manufacturer if their product is compatible with galv.

Sprayed on fireproofing material doesn't last long in a carpark.

hokie66,
Can you please expand a bit on why it doesn't last long in a ca carpark. That is what the architect has specified. Encasing columns, beams, x-braces, and the base plates in concrete is not an option, is intumescent painting a good option? Thanks

Sprayed on fireproofing is friable...does not survive impacts. At least the kind of sprayed on material I am familiar with. Maintenance headache. Intumescent coatings sound like a better idea, but I suggest getting your information directly from a coating supplier or fireproofing contractor.
