1.0 Usually the first and last pipe/plate of each heat is
HIC tested.
2.0 The orientation of the specimens is illustrated in
NACE-TM0284 however, I usually require one set of
specimens taken from the center of the plate/pipe for
both HIC & Mechanical Testing.
3.0 I stipulate that in the event of failure of the test
for the materials in any heat the entire lot from that
particular heat shall be rejected and retesting shall
not be permitted.
4.0 NACE-TM0284 does not outline acceptance criterion. I
usually outline the following:
4.1 Surface blistering is acceptable
4.2 Longitudinal Crack Thickness (LCT) shall not exceed
0.1mm
4.3 Transverse or stepwise Crack Thickness (TCT) shall
not exceed 0.1mm
4.4 Crack Length Ratio (CLR) shall not exceed 5% (average
of 3 sections)
4.5 Crack Thickness Ratio (CTR) shall not exceed 3%
(average of 3 sections)
4.6 Crack sensitivity Ratio (CSR) shall not exceed 1.5%
(average of 3 sections)
5.0 I usually require the use of Solution "A", although it
wouldnt be such a bad idea to consider using NACE-
TM0177 test solution

and the following material
requirements:
5.X Maximum hardness value of 180 BHN
5.1 The welded pipes shall be to API 5L Gr.B for wall
thickness up to 1.25”.
5.2 Thickness above 1.25”, the welded pipes shall be
ordered to ASTM A672 Gr.C60
5.3 The maximum carbon equivalent shall be 0.38%
calculated on the basis of product analysis using the
formula contained in supplementary requirement S20.2
of SA20.
5.4 Maximum phosphorus content shall be 0.012% by product
analysis
5.5 Sulphur content shall be a maximum of 0.003% by
product analysis and shall be inclusion shape
controlled
5.6 Supplementary requirement S2.1 of SA 20 shall apply
to product analysis.
5.7 Supplementary requirement S21.1 of SA 20 shall apply
to trace elements. In addition, the maximum Calcium
content shall be 0.005% and the Ca/S ratio shall be
greater than or equal to 1.5 when S is greater than
0.0015%. Also, the Al : N ratio shall be greater than
or equal to 2 : 1.
5.8 Plates shall be ultrasonically tested to ISO 10124
with acceptance level B3. The examination shall be
continuous over 100% of the plate. In the event of
any recordable indications, the location of these
shall be traced through fabrication. Recordable
indications shall clear main seam of nozzle welds by
a minimum of 75 mm
P.S I dont see the need to HIC test seamless pipes if they
meet the material specification requirements.
Cheers,
