Is there any way to change the Write Access for a whole assembly without changing each indivdual part?

Assuming you don't have a PDM system, this would be a Windows function & it depends on your User & Group setup. The permissions can be set at the containing folder level. RMB the folder & select Sharing & Security. If you are not sure about the settings, research the Windows Help files before changing anything.

Goto "Option...">"System Options">"External Reference">, then enable "Open referenced documents with read-only access.

Have you checked out the Collaboration option (under System Options) in SW05? See the what's new for claification... it's worth while to investigate, because works extremly well.

This works,

"Option...">"System Options">"External Reference">, then enable "Open referenced documents with read-only access.

But then every assembly I open all the parts are read only.

SolidCreative ... Sorry, I'm confused by your answer ... are you trying to say that you have the solution to your problem, or that you are still needing one?

By enabling "open referenced documents with read-only access",

If you have assembly open with write access, you can "make read only" to the assembly and parts within it with just the one comand. That is good.

However, the person trying to get write access has to get rights to the assembly and each part individualy.

Plus, every part in every assembly you open, opens as read only.

Autodesk inventor preforms the multi enviroment function very well.
