Determining design values using BMD of a portal frame

All, how can one determine the design values for the dead plus superimposed load cases using a bending moment diagram(elastic moment for the characteristic dead load case). i will appreciate a step by step guide on how to do this.

I assume that superimposed load has a similar load distribution and same safety factors and the structure will still behave elastically, than I would just multiply the dead load case by the appropriate ratio of the dead v's super.

as for the second part of your question "please provide step by step guide on how to do this" makes me feel like an abused geek.
