Dear Team,

During inspection we observed that the weld-o-let fittings are not fitted or welded properly and have incomplete root penetration. Please note that this is a sour gas piping / on a reciprocating high-pressure gas compressor.

These spools are part of the compressor package and were fabricated at the packager's workshop and not on-site. The spools were hydro-tested have passed hydrostatic test. Please see attached pictures.

I would appreciate your advice on this, as our EPC contractor has submitted a technical query that this is acceptable.

S.G,
This is not just for you but anyone else interested in this subject.
The B31.3 committee is currently looking at the issue of NDT of Integrally Reinforced Fittings - extremely difficult to RT and in a lot of cases UT as well.
I have put forward an informal proposal that the weld attaching the fitting (Olet / Weldolet) to the run pipe must be visually inspected internally before the branch pipe is welded to the Olet / Weldolet).
Will see what eventuates.
Cheers,
Shane

Hello Shane (DekDee),

Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated.

My suggestions
1) Use a olet for welder performance qualification.
2)Visual inspection of the first pass of weld during fabrication
3)Acoustic emission test is the best practice during hydrostatic pressure test and in-service inspection.
