Can someone let me know if the ASTM D892 (Standard Test Method for Foaming Characteristics of Lubricating Oils), is the only standard test method available for testing the foaming tendency of crudes, if not point me in the direction of other methods and if relevant the most appropriate for API crudes <20

thanks

Let's start by saying I've no experience in this particular subject. However, I know that heavy hydrocarbons are associated with higher surface tensions (ST).

The importance of ST is that it controls the ease of formation and the stability of foams and emulsions. It also governs the detergent properties of an oil. It may also, together with viscosity, control the amount of oil recoverable from a crude oil reservoir.

Having said that, would you care to run ASTM D 1331 Method A, to see how it correlates with D 892 and with plant performance ?
