Does anyone have a design example of a cross bracing connection with gusset plates?. The members are square HSSs and I am looking for a design example (or a reference) for the connection between the two cross bracings with a gusset plate.
dear connectegr, i coul not see a design sample in the link you sent. also, i need the connection between the braces not the end connection. please clarify.
Sorry, I attached only a sketch of the "X" intersection in the middle.
Are you trying to design the braces or the connections. For either case you need to provide more information. Examples for the connection calculations can be found in the AISC Manual and CD.
connectgr, I am trying to design what is shown on your sketch, i.e., the connection (not the braces). If you can share the design calcs for that, it would be nice; if not could you direct me to the pages in the AISC Manual where examples of connections like the one you uploaded are?. Thanks.
As shown in the sketch the gusset plate is a through plate.
Check the plate gross cross section for tension and compression (buckling). The setback is very small, so buckling should be OK. Design the field welds for the HSS to gusset (4 fillet welds, minimum length equal to the HSS width). Check shear in the gusset plate along the welds. Check the net section of the HSS, and remember shear lag.
Refer to Chapter 6 of the AISC HSS Connection Manual. Or AISC Design Guide 24
