Copy and Paste or Copy Geom?

When creating a new part in an assembly is better to use copy geometry to bring datum and surface references in the new part? Or is it just as good to activate the part and use copy and paste while still in the assembly window?

After playing with I think I have an idea. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Copy Geometry is associative where as copy and paste is not. yes?

"copy/paste" IS associative.... or??


If you have an assembly, activates a part, copy and paste some surfs from antoher part into it... and then change you "referense parts" geometry (the one you got your surfs from..). and then hit regenreate.... the surf will update.


However, Iwould prefer copy geometry (then you dont need an assembly for copying surfaces....it couldcause trouble iin pdmlink/intralink when checking out/in parts, doesnt have to, but it could)

apart of PDMLINK case the Copy/Paste got other backwards.

Some of them are:

*copied geometry do not follow the movement or rotation of "container"(part that contains copied geometry). For example - assemble empty part with a possibility to rotate(by connections or by predefined datum plane). Next copy surfaces by Copy/Paste with activated part. Then Rotate the part. You will notice the part will rotate however geometry will stay on its origin position.

Solution - create a model first. delete it from assembly, and then build in subassembly with a rotation posibility. For me it works fine.

I encounter this behaviour all the time when I work with master model technique within ordinary Pro/E package(no AXX)

*external references created in sketcher or in datums can not and should not be changed anywhere than on the assembly level where those references were created!

This can really cause a lot of problems when is oversighted. However Pro/E always warnings You when it happens.



*mess - yes it is. Publish geometry and copy geom by the differance in icons establish better structure in model tree. It is easier to navigate and to know what and why.

For a couple of years I worked with AXX, now over 2 years without it. It is struggling, but almost the same can be achieved.

I haven`t seen that yet. Suppose this comes from the newest PTC letter right?

For me if one is equiped with AXX there is no question what to use.

Rest of user are left with a lot of legwork which is even more crucial by the lack of the Global reference viewer. I wish PTC add only this feature to the ordinary package. Life would be easier after that

The core idea behing master model technique regarding ordinary license is to:

*stay late with merging surfaces in the master model. I noticed deividng master model into several crucial quilts instead of making one big can pay its bills in future, when some changes must be introduced and changed normal vector "nukes" all Your present job up!

*if sketchers are in use for maintaining references in assembly, try to minimize its overall number. Nothing is worst then replacing entities in sketcher(however it is right place to blow Pro/E`s own horn by the chance of the use of Replace).

*sometimes it is wise to create same sketchers in subassemblies instead of copy them, and link them within relations in top assembly.
This brings a lot more flexibility to the whole assembly.
