Conditional Formatting in Excel based on Different Cell (2)

Statesman's question reminded me of a recent problem I had with conditional formatting .... I have three cells one which contains an independant variable, and two others which contain calculations based on that variable. One of the two is correct for a certain range of values (of the independant variable) and the other for the rest. I want to highlight the one which is correct using conditional formatting, but based on the value of the first cell not the value of the cell to be formatted.

Can this be done?

Absolutely, but not by referencing the independant variable. To do this, go to conditional formatting and select "cell value is" and "between". Next, enter the equation of the cell you want formatted, except instead of entering the independent cell, enter the minimum and maximum values for the equation (based on the independent variable)...

If your equation is y=2*X^3, and you wanted conditional formatting between x = 0 and X = 10, you would enter...

=2*0^3 in the cell after the "between" combobox and =2*10^3 in the final cell. You can repeat the procedure for the other cell using the same method.
