Hello All,

I have an inquiry regarding staircase design.

The architect would like to have an open thread staircase made up of concrete stringers and timber panel finishes for the thread. How would I design this kind of staircase? Can I make use of the stringers as a support for the staircase as the architect did not allow to have a column, as they want an open space below the rc landing.

Thank you.

By "threads", are we to assume that you might have meant to say "treads" (the part you put your foot on)? Are the stringers joined in any way (other than by the treads), or are they two separate structural members? A sketch would help to elicit a better answer to your question. It is common for the landing framing, and the stringers, to be continuous members, to span distances from stair head to foot, without the need for a central support column. These form a "bent" structural element, that resists the bending moments at the bends.

The design is called an "open riser design". In the US they are not allowed if the stairway is part of an accessible route for disabilities. In other locations they might be allowed. Agree with thaidavid....a sketch would be helpful.

Concrete stringers continuous through the landing with no columns at the landing, is what I am seeing from your description. It can be done but you will have to post some good pictures.

Did you perhaps say it backward? Concrete treads and timber stringers make more sense...... Agree that US require closed risers.
