Column alternative.

I'm a steel fabricator in the middle of a remodel. The engineer spec'd out 6x6 PSL columns with a compressive strength roughly around 18,000 lb. The contractor has asked for an option of steel columns, to facilitate some plumbing and electrical. Question is what size either square or pipe should I be looking for. The column will be anchored to the floor and bolted to the overhead beam. The beam is going to be drilled for wood padding so it will be braced. I was thinking either 3-in standard pipe or 3x3x1/4 or 5/16. But just wanted to confirm this.

1) I'd say that you best bet is to have the engineer of record for the project help you out with this.

2) We'd need the height of the columns to be able to verify capacity for a true design.

3) In many cases, you could probably substitute a steel column with the same EI as the wood column for common post applications. Of course, that assumes that the original post was designed correctly.
