How detrimental is 700 deg F to grey cast iron, will it stress relieve enough to need remachining? I know remachining is needed if its into the 1400 deg F range. Sorry I ran out of time and just couldn't finish the first post.

It will only stress relieve at any temperature if it has frozen in stress to be relieved.

Pat

What grade of cast iron?

What is the starting state of the piece? As-cast, machined, already tempered or annealed?

Heated how?

Cooled how and for how long?

The possibility for distortion is largely dependent on geometry.

Just typical engine blocks heads etc.
