Capping the stubs on Rotating equipment

Hi, I am looking for a solution for a open Pipe stub meant for Seal Gas for Lobe blower. Our Lobe blower handles air and hence there is no need for any inert gas sealing. Because of this reason Piping stub is left open. I know this pipe piece will not be used and also is no way create any problem for operations. But "technically" many people feel we should plug the pipe. There is a suggestion, to plug it with a cap and seal weld it. If this is correct, may i know is there an Industry standard / practice which could be refered for doing it?

If the manufacturer intended the pipe to be capped it would probably have a threaded or flanged end. If it is a plain end pipe, they may have intended this as a leak-off connection in which case it should not be plugged or capped. If this is truly a seal gas (buffer gas) connection that is unnecessary on an air machine, then it might be appropriate to cap it using normal practices for the given pipe size, schedule and material. Welding a cap might require pre-heat, a specific weld plan and post-weld-heat-treatment. But, without knowing the details about the pipe, it is impossible to say for sure.

You should consult with the equipment manufacturer to make certain that you know the purpose of the pipe. You should consult with your piping engineers regarding the preferred method to cap a pipe of this material in this service.

If you are pushed and there is still any doubt and/or a thin wall tube you might want to use an appropriate Plug from EST, Expansion Seal Technology
