Benched fill 1

Does anyone have a drawing of what I used to call "benched fill?" When I was a (much) younger engineer, we would design a 1'-18" step in the existing fill so that the fill being brought up adjacent to it could/would be mixed and compacted as the fill was brought up. This was SOP. I'm now working on an enlarged dam, and need a sketch (and spec.) for this work. Any ideas? Thanks
