Beam Formula ? 1

Has anybody seen the attached beam formula? I am reviewing and old clac that uses this formula to determine max span 's" of a steel beam for making sure that the beam is rigid. This beam is being attached to an existing beam that at the point of attachment has stiffness K.

K is the minimum stiffness that is supposedly desired for the new beam.

If you can reference the source/book it would be appreciated.

maybe it's a common structural term, but how do you define stiffness for a beam ?
eg stiffness for a rod is AE/L

what loading is assumed ? UDL ? point ?? harmonic ???

is the beam assumed to be simply supported ?

can you clean up the pic ... whats the denominator of K ?
ie beta^4 * 4EI = K/?

again, maybe it's a common structural term, but what does "rigid" mean to you ?
fixed ends (cantilever) ? small deflections ??
 
I do not recognize the formula and your description of the problem is not clear. Perhaps you should copy the calculation and post it.

The "beta" term is similar to that used for beams on elastic foundations. I'd look into that theory if you're not familiar to try and figure out what assumption was made.
