ASME B31.8 Chap IX for sour service asks for compliance to NACE MR0175, presumably because following the rules for hardness etc. in that standard will keep sour service lines safe. Note however that Section 833 of the Code recognizes the 'stress range' approach as acceptable. This approach is based on a 'shakedown to an elastic condition' which implies some initial plastic yielding and NACE MR0175 is only valid for elastic stresses. So it would seem that the Code violates the limitations of MR0175. Can anyone comment on this conflict?
