Phovnanian,

Thanks for the link. It is really difficult to see any information on the map you pointed out. I hope others might be able to guide me to some better maps

Go to and drill down into the weather measurement category / then lightning detection category / then data and archive reports.

There are seasonal and multi-year lightning activity studies with really good geographic selection criteria.

Vaisala is the company that owns the National Lightning Detection Network that NOAA and all the weather bureaus use.

Good on ya!

IEEE Std 998, IEEE Guide for Direct Lightning Stroke Shielding of Substations has a thunderstorm day map of the USA. There is also a thunderstorm day map of the USA at and one at These are all different.

There is also a flash density map at

Thank you all for your response.

I wasn't sure if the map shown in IEEE Std 998 is still usable and wanted to see what sources or links others were using to figure lightning flash density and average annual thunderstorm days etc for their shielding studies.

If you look up Thompson Lightning Protection, inc. at you will find a risk assessment link that provides an isoceraunic map of the US and also the methodology for the lightning risk assesment calculation.

EEJaime
