The following welding is required:

1. BS1501-151 Gr.430A to SA-516 Gr.70
2. BS1501-151 Gr.430A to BS1501-151 Gr.430A
3. SA-516 Gr.70 to SA-516 Gr.70

The company that will do the welding say they only have a WPS/PQR available for (3.) and wish to know if they can use it for (1.) and (2.) as well. Our inspector on site informed me that he sees no issue with this, his reasoning being that BS1501-151 Gr.430A is similar to ASME II P1 Group 1 material and as the WPS/PQR covers SA-516 Gr.70 (P1 G2) it can cover BS1501-151 Gr.430A as well.

Is his reasoning correct?

Cobus,
Your inspector is not correct.
It may be similar but if it is not listed in ASME IX QW 420 it is classified as "Unassigned" and requires separate qualification,

Thanks for the reply DekDee. His exact wording was:

"To my understanding:

BS1501 Gr430A is Similar ASME P1 Gp1 material (Unassigned Material)

Therefore as per ASME section IX Edition 2010:

PQR attached should be acceptable for welding P1 Gp 2 (SA 516 Gr 70) to similar P1 Gp 1 (BS1501 Gr430A)
&
Similar P1 Gp 1 (BS1501 Gr430A) to itself"

Does this change anything on your advice?

Kobus,
Does not change anything as the BS steel is not a P1 Gr1.
P numbers are assigned to materials by the ASME IX committee and if it is not listed in QW 420 it has not been assigned a P number, therefore it requires a PQR as it is an unassigned material.

DD
