I am running a new riser to a 14 building apartments in NYC, the existing service is not sufficient for new loads in the apartments. I was planning to run the riser in the same shaft with mechanical pipes, the shaft starts in the basement by the elevator machine room and this room is a complete mess with all pipes running there is no space to pass the riser through the room in order to get to the shaft. The other way is to have the riser run through a commercial store and then turn back to the shaft, can I do that? the other question is can i run BX risers inside the shaft instead of EMT or RGSC?

I highly appreciate the help.

I would say you cannot serve one building or service by running through another building - per NEC - unless it is encased in concrete.

In NYC, I would expect things to be even more restrictive. I know it will be painful, but you really need to talk with the local AHJ prior to doing in design or construction to determine what is permissible. NYC is its own world and they have their own rules regarding nearly everything.

I really doubt that BX junk would be allowed. You can break it open with your bare hands.

If it's all one building and one owner, it may be allowed. What dpc said - The NYC code reads like a holdover from the 1950's. Be sure you are very familiar with it and get to know your inspector.

“The engineer's first problem in any design situation is to discover what the problem really is.” Unk.
