I want to use an aluminum sheet as a heat shield. Standoff will be 2" from exhaust pipe. What material grade is typically used and with what surface finish (i.e. AA3003, mill finish)?

What is the temperature of the pipe?

Do you need to machine the aluminium? or just shear and bend?

No load?

NickE:
1. ~500 degrees F. Components in the same vicinity are less than this.
2. Shear to size; no bend and no machining.
3. Absolutely no load except its own weight.

Extra info. Will be predominantly used in coastal area (Florida).

Any locally available commercial structural grade of aluminium extrude or sheet will do just fine.

What he said.

For corosion resistance you might want to go with the highest Al content. I think thats the 1xxx series...
Really though any thing you can get will be just fine.
