I have a condition where a 1/4" fillet weld has already been made. Now, a 5/16" fillet weld is required. Is it acceptable to just ad the additional 1/16" of weld?

Thanks!

Hi bsh117

You don't say how thick your metal components are, but your fillet weld size cannot exceed the thickness of the smallest section within the joint.

Sorry, I didn't mention the thickness because they are ample size for a 5/16" weld...5/8" plates.

Yes, provided you add filler metal to make the existing fillet legs equal in size for a 5/16" weld.

Also remember to have the initial weld properly cleaned before adding new filler metal.

There is no maximum fillet weld size in a T joint.
