Quick question: In this equation "M2,min = Pu*(0.6+0.03h)", does "h" refer to thickness or height? According to the glossary, it could be either! It is frustrating that a code would use the same symbol for thickness and height.
 
h is the thickness of the column in the direction being analyzed.

I guess it could be confusing, but the reason h is defined as such, is that it is also considered the height (read "depth") of the member when referring to flexural members.

In all cases, it is always a measure of one of the cross-sectional dimensions, not a "length", per se.
 
Thanks, slickdeals and frv. ACI should really clarify it in the code because logically, in my mind at least, it could be either and yields very different results.
 
The definitions at the beginning show h as height of overall member thickness - see page 22. That's where I always go if something isn't clear.
 
Page 22: h = overall thickness OR height of member, in.
 
lion... that's what steellion was referring to.. the definition reads "overall thickness or height of member.."
 
Oh, that it could be one or the other?
 
Forgive me not reading the entire OP very clearly!
