Differing Fv values between Design Codes

The values listed in ASCE 7-16 11.4-2 are slightly different than those listed in API650 (or AWWA D-100). How do you reconcile the difference here? Do reference codes override? For instance, in ASCE 7-16, site Class D Fv = [2.4,2.2,2.0,1.9,1.8] While in API650-e13(or D100), Site Class D, Fv =...

    CBC and ASCE Version

Cross post over from Civil, looking for more insight here: For some reason I was under the impression that the 2022 California Building Code was updated to follow ASCE 7-22. Is this not actually the case? Are we still in ASCE 7-16? Can one adopt 7-22 for a design to be more current? This is in...

    CBC and ASCE Version

For some reason I was under the impression that the 2022 California Building Code was updated to follow ASCE 7-22. Is this not actually the case? Are we still in ASCE 7-16? Can one adopt 7-22 for a design to be more current? This is in general, but mostly in regard to the seismic design values...

    Square Tank Analysis

Seeking a reference for analyzing tanks with square sidewalls, rather than cylindrical. I understand the wall stresses are unique for each, with methods spelled out for cylindrical tanks in API 650. Cheers

    ShakeMap

Has anyone messed around with installing ShakeMap on their own system (http://usgs.github.io/shakemap/index.html)? I was able to do this, in order to create my own earthquake scenarios for research, etc. The product outputs nice maps of shaking intensity etc, but in image / PDF format. Luckily...

    S_DS Heat Map

Wondering if there is a heat or contour map out there of S_SDS values. I understand there are low-resolution SM1 Maps in ASCE, and also the ASCE Hazard mapping tool to get site specific data. But I am sort of looking for combination of the two, to visually show the SDS values in high resolution...

    N_h calculation Clarification - API 650

Referring to an old closed thread here: https://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=178312 Interesting N_h isnt not explicity covered in an equation, though its in list of Notaiton (E.2.2) In the previous thread @JStephen states "It's the hydrostatic stress times the thickness. .. Nh=...

    Keeping Track of Stamped Projects?

Curious if anyone keeps a record (e.g. spreadsheet) of all the projects they have stamped in their professional life? I have not yet done this, but considered it as this count continues to grow. Seems like a good way to quickly reflect back on different projects or refer back if needed.

    Bluebeam Revu Printing Stamps issue?

I am using an image of a signed PE stamp for document approvals. Another timestamp for this digital version. Looks fine in PDF, however when printing, the image of the actual stamp and signature does not print. Anyone had this issue? Or what is the best method for adding stamps in Revu which...

Elevated Tank Leg Bracing and R value

ASCE Table 15.4-2 specifies two different R values for elevated tanks based on leg bracing. R of 2 for unbraced legs and R of 3 for symmetrically braced legs. I am wondering if the bay bracing must be 2-way to be considered symmetrically braced or if 1-way bracing satisfies this.

    Special Inspections - "minor nature"

CA building codes provides an exemption for special inspection for "construction of a minor nature" (1704.2). Seems completely subjective. Is this up to the engineer to decide? For instance, I have a project (going to permit and requiring other SIs) but one aspect requiring maybe one cuyd of...

    Combined Cast-In & Post Installed

Potentially looking at a unique detail for an anchor. Due to various site conditions, I am considering an anchoring system which utilizes both post-installed (adhesive) for the lower portion of the anchor embedment, and then cast-in the remaining portion of the anchor. Obviously this is...

    ACI 318 Chapter 17 Clarification

Hello, Seeking a bit of clarification in Chapter 17 of ACI 318-14. Section 17.4.1.2 defines the nominal strength of the anchor in tension, N_sa as Area*1.9*AnchorYield However, 17.2.3.4.3(a) says "The steel strength shall be taken as 1.2 times the nominal steel strength of the anchor." So is...

    CA PE Stamp..with a bear?

Hello, Shopping for a new PE Stamp, Digital one specifically (even though I can likely draw one up in cad fairly easily). Anyway I immediately came to this site ( https://www.pestamps.com/product/california-professional-engineer-bear-stamp/ ) which has the typical CA stamp, but also has the...

28 day Concrete Strength after 10+ years

Is the 28-day concrete strength exceeded after long periods of time? I know concrete gets stronger over time, but unlikely to stop after 28 days. So, for instance, if a concrete is 3500 psi at 28 days, can one assume it is actually stronger than this after 10 or 20 years? Thanks.

    ISO 898-1 Area of Stress

NOTE: Cross posting this, as I had no replies for 3 weeks in "ISO Standards & Certifications Forum" Looking for a bit of clarification in regard to thread stress area. I am finding two formulas for calculating area of stress in a threaded bolt, One is directly from ISO 898-1 (2009) as which...

    ISO 898-1 Area of Stress

Looking for a bit of clarification in regard to thread stress area. I am finding two formulars for calculating area of stress in a threaded bolt, One is directly from ISO 898-1 as which includes A_s,nom which relates the difference in the thread pitch diameters of the internal and external...

Drilling through rebar, slab on grade

This is somewhat related to an old thread: https://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=201244 However that was an elevated slab. In short, is there a quantifiable impact to the strength of a reinforced slab on grade if select rebar are drilled through/severed (for LST anchoring)? Rebar is...

    AISC vs AISI Design checks

Generally, what is the difference between AISC and AISI design checks? I understand that AISI is for cold formed steel. I am designing small stainless steel structures, which i understand would follow AISC Design Guide 27 (select differences / modifications to AISC), but some member sections...
