Hi

Could anyone tell me if there is a Free addin for excel that will let me plot a normal distribution curve, histograms etc. Any help will be appreciated

If you go to the menu Insert|Paste Function, there is a selection of statistical functions available already in Excel.

Also, try using the Help function.

I have tried that, but it only gives you the value of the normal distribution and std dev. I want to plot a distribution curve for a sample of data. However there doesnt seem to be the facility to do so.

I'd start out from Insert|Chart|X-Y scatter

what you need to do in install the analysis toolpak that comes with excel.

from menu, select: tools-addins
select anaylsis toolpak and analysis toolpak - vba.

once add-ins are installed, from main menu, select tools-data analysis and you will find all the statistical information you requested.

I don't think the toolpak will give you the ability to automatically graph what you want. I have gotten a commercial product which I feel works well, QI Macros. It is a very good SPC Excel add-in. Its available at

The "histogram analysis" function in the analysis toolpack will what you mention allthough its not very elegant. I think you must do the std. plot yourself (also the transformation because excel dont have a plot with std. dev. axis).

In order to get the plot, you will have to enter the discrete X values of the coordinates in one column or row, then calculate the probability mass function based on your statistics and each independent X in another column/row. Then make a chart with those two arrays as the inputs.
