Does anyone know of a good text explaining machine frame design.  I am designing the supporting structure of a industrial abrasive water cutter.

RE: machine frame design

Try using standard bases for construction ideas. Or better, purchase a standard. They may be less expensive than making your own.

MACHINE Bases by Inter-lakes 810/294 8120

I don't know of any text books. My experience came from designing special transfer amd other types of machines for various machine builders.

Check out Design of Weldments by Omar Blodgett.  It is a great reference and is available through Lincoln Electric for a very modest price (~$15).

RE: machine frame design

I have a book that used to be given out free (or cheap, I can't remember) by Lincoln Welding. The whole book was about general ideas on how to use weldments for all kinds of machinery bases and parts. It just gave general ideas on how to bend and weld. It does not help with strength calculations. For that, go to Shigley or the Metals Handbook on Welding.
