What type of pump would be most appropriate for pumping lake or pond water from one side of a barrier, through the barrier, to other side? There is to be no change in elevation and the barrier is fabric (and thus there is little friction as the distance to be pumped is very short). Temperatures will range from 60 to 90f and energy efficiency is very important. Flow rates are 1500 to 2000 gph. Would like to do better in efficiency than DC bilge pumps which generate unnecessary pressure.

If the barrier is fabric and doesn't create a friction loss and the levels are the same then you wont need a pump it'll go on it's own

Axial flow pumps are high flow low head, and have good efficiency.  However, they are typically used for large flows of 500-150,000 GPM, where head requirements are low, typically <30 ft.

A point of clarification: we want to pump water from the surrounding lake water into a barrier-separated enclosure. So while there is no difference in elevation, by pumping water continuously into the enclosure we get a change-over of the enclosed water. The purpose is to effect a water treatment with a known retention time.

Try a search for fountain pumps. I had a customer that found very high GPMs with insanely low heads in a centrifugal pump. Otherwise a "sewage" pump may be the ticket.
