Magnetic Bar stock

Greetings. Working on a linear type solenoid. Have identified internal core component to be low carbon <.05, Mn .22 P, .011... HRB 27-37. Material identifes as AISI 1005, 1006.  I am having trouble locating bar stock to make prototype samples, and to secure a production source. Does anyone have a source? or might reccomend an alternate more commercially available material? We have had some luck with 12L14, but variations in carbon up to .15 may give is some performance issues. Any input would be appreciated.

If you want really low carbon irons, look for Carpenter Electrical Iron or Consumet Electrical Iron.  They are both available in bar form with .02% max carbon.  I'd look more toward 1008 or 1010, still pretty low carbon although I've had decent results with 12L14.  You could also look at silicon iron B-FM, the added resistivity may be beneficial.

You don't say what diameter bars you are looking for.  These specialty steels are generally only available in small sizes.

dg, i was just on the carpenter tech page looking up the electrical iron, DO you have any BH curves on this material? I am looking for 1.125 inch diameter min bar size.  Thanks for your reply.... Scott

Not for electrical iron, never used any.  Here is what I used to use for 1005 back when we could buy it.  The electrical irons will be very similar, mostly the coercive force will be lower.

 Ill plug this into our FEA software and see what i get.
I have been able to find some 1002 Bar stock which i am having delivered. The electrical iron was outrageously priced, and is far too costly for our design. What materials are you using in place of the 1005 that you used to employ?

I thought we had gone to 1008 but I just double checked and we are using 1006.

BAr stock? what size? caould you give me your supplier info, I am looking for some sample stock in a real big hurry? I  need 1.125 min diameter. please let me know if you can assist in any way.

1005 is extremely hard to find - and I am in the magnet industry and get asked for it. Realistically, you should design for 1010, which is much easier to find, or 1018, which practically falls from the sky in comparison. These give you 95% and 90% percent of the performance with much better machinability and corrosion resistance. If you absolutely have to have 1005, I can check with the buyer for who our source is, but in general, if you're in the design phase, you'll save yourself a lot of headaches using something different.

Dave thanks for your feedback, we did find 1005 was basically un unubtainable unless we wanted  a mill run.  ( our metalurgist had id'd this material as 1005 so that is what we were looking for). We have been able to specify carbon content below .07% with our metal supplier for 12L, this and an annealing process seem ths far to put the properties where we need them to be. It has been a learning experience!  I appreciate your comments.... they ring true.
