Yield/Tensile to Shear Strength

For most structural steels the yield stress in shear is approx. equal to Fy/(sq.rt. of 3) or about .58Fy. This comes from the Hencky-von Mises yield criterion. Testing indicates ultimate shear strength is in the range of 2/3 to 3/4 of tensile strength. Why not check with your material supplier?
