Wrapping text in a merged cell

I have a protected sheet with merged cells. The cells are formatted to wrap. When the data is larger than the merged cell, the cell does not wrap. You need to unprotect the sheet; then increase the row height to force to wrap. Any
Suggestions on how to force it to wrap automatically?

for excel 2000:
i've previously encountered the same situation and ended up altering the spreadsheet to accommodate the situation or i changed the formatting. i try to avoid merging cells that have varying input data.
i have added more columns, with narrow widths (3 or 4 width) and reformatted the remainder of the sheet to satisfy the needs. the problem still remains for long input data. another technique is to use only one cell - no merging of cells - and format it to wrap text. this cell size should be that to handle all input lengths. this again requires formatting the rest of the sheet.
not an easy fix, but there are others that may have an answer.

Does the data vary by an equation, or is it typed in manually?

If it is manual, you can force a word wrap by hitting <Alt>+<Enter> to force a carriage return at the end of your line.

The problem is the spreadsheet needs to look like a word document, as this is an official company document. I ended up writing VB code to go around it.

The problem is that excel does not increase the row height automatically for merged cells to display wrapped data.
