wrapping onto surfaces

what is a "Non-developable surface" and why can't iwrap a sketch onto it.Every time i try to wrap a sketch onto the surface, the following appears, "Non-developable surfaces are not acceptable. Please reselect." How do i wrap and is it at all possible? thanks
