I need to make WPS/PQR of ASTM A487 4C as base material and 316 as overlay.
I am not able to find P number for 4C.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
Carlo

I reviewed AWS 2.1-2005 and for ASTM A 487 Grade 4 Class C, there is no specific material/Group number, so this material is probably unclassified.

I can find Grade 4 Class A, B and E. These are listed by M-No 10F, 11A and 11A, respectively.

You should order this casting as A487 Gr. 4A (P No.3). The main difference is that 4A has a maximum tensile strength limit. Your foundry may be able to dual certify the casting depending on the mechanical properties, and then it would have a P number.

Be carefull overlaying with 316. Depending on dilution, you can end up with a martensitic composition, which would be crack prone. If possible, overlay with one layer of 309, and then one layer of 316.
