is there a difference in torque output between a 1 start and a 4 start wormgear

If the pitch and the number of teeth remain constant, the four start worm gear has four times the output speed and one quarter the output torque, if we ignore friction. With worm gears, one must never ignore friction.

Ha! I love the warning in that last sentence: "With worm gears, one must never ignore friction." Sounds like a quote from some Greek epic.

Just one minor point about the OP, it's the worm that would have multiple starts rather than the worm gear.

tbuelna,

Maybe it is! Do we know everything about how Heracles cleaned out the Augean Stables?

Good point. Hercules may have been assisted in this labor by a very obscure mythological figure: Mu, the Greek god of friction.
