wood beam/post connection with lags 1

An 8x12 timber beam butts into a continuous 8x8 post -- outdoors (protected from direct weather) and exposed to view. The connection is 4 lag screws (2 top, 2 bot) through the post into the end of the beam. Beam end reaction is 3000 lb. Is there a problem with this connection?

Typically wood beams are not attached through the end grain. see:

Consider using a bracket so the beam is in bearing.

To follow up on boo1's recommendation - you can probably find a satisfactory bracket from TECO (if they don't have one, you'll probably have to design & fabricate one). Here is a link to their design manual / catalog:
